Antique Carved Wooden “STANDARD” Sign, Circa 1900
A beautifully aged antique carved wooden sign featuring the word STANDARD framed within an ornate decorative cartouche. The bold lettering is surrounded by delicate floral and scrollwork carving, giving the piece a wonderful balance of strong typography and Victorian ornament.
The warm oak surface shows rich patina and honest wear from age and use. Evidence of old mounting holes on the reverse suggests the sign was once attached to a larger structure, possibly part of a shop display, machinery housing, or a commercial shipping crate.
Today the piece reads almost like a small piece of architectural salvage. The graphic lettering and hand carved detail make it a striking decorative object, whether hung on the wall, layered on a shelf, or incorporated into a gallery arrangement.

Collector’s Notes
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, carved wooden signage was commonly used on commercial crates, machinery, and shop displays before printed metal advertising became widespread. Pieces like this reflect a time when even utilitarian branding was crafted by hand, combining bold typography with decorative carving.
Today these objects are appreciated not only for their historical connection to early industry and commerce, but also for their sculptural quality and graphic presence.
