Antique Steiff Bear on Wheels Germany, c.1909–1915
An early and exceptionally well-preserved Steiff “Bär auf Rädern” (Bear on Wheels) from the company’s pre–World War I period. Crafted in Germany between 1909 and 1915, this charming bear features short mohair plush, black glass eyes, and a hand-stitched cord nose. The bear retains its original nickel Steiff button in the left ear — a rare survival and hallmark of authenticity.
Supported on four cast-iron spoked wheels with its original metal axles, the piece moves smoothly and displays beautifully. The form captures Steiff’s earliest animal silhouette: lean, alert, and full of subtle character. The surface shows even age toning and expected wear consistent with its age, lending a warm, time-softened finish.
Dimensions: 8” L × 5.5” H × 3.5” W
Condition: Excellent early example with original button, mohair, and wheels intact; light, even wear from age and handling.
Collector’s Note
Early Steiff animals such as this are coveted for their pre-teddy era design and handmade charm. Retaining both button and original wheel assembly, this example represents the company’s foundational craftsmanship before mass production took hold. A museum-quality survivor — quietly dignified and utterly endearing.
